Da Nang Weather: When to Visit and What to Pack

5 min read

Practical guide to Da Nang's seasons, what to pack, and when to book. No fluff, just what you need to pick the right dates for your group trip.

Weather makes or breaks beach trips. Here's what you need to know about Da Nang's seasons, what to pack, and when to come.

The Two Seasons

Da Nang has dry season and wet season. That's it.

Dry Season: February to August

This is peak time. Clear skies, calm ocean, hot sun. Temperatures run 28-35°C (82-95°F). Barely any rain.

Best months: March, April, May. Perfect weather, not too hot yet, ocean is calm and clear.

Hot months: June, July, August. Gets up to 35°C+. Still great for beach, but you'll be sweating. This is when Korean groups come (summer vacation), so villas book up fast.

What to expect: Sun every day. Swim-friendly ocean. Great for families, beach activities, basically everything.

Wet Season: September to January

Rain happens. Not all day every day, but you'll get storms. Ocean gets rougher (bigger waves, good for surfing). Temperatures drop to 20-28°C (68-82°F).

Worst months: October, November. Heavy rain, typhoons possible (rare but it happens), rough seas. We don't usually recommend these months unless you're okay with plan B being "stay at the villa."

Shoulder months: September, December, January. Rain is hit-or-miss. You might get lucky with great weather, or you might get a few rainy days. Prices are lower, fewer crowds.

What to expect: Mix of sun and rain. Ocean can be rough (waves 1-2 meters). Still warm enough to swim when it's not raining. Some groups love it because it's quieter and cheaper.

When to Book (Real Talk)

If You Want Perfect Weather

Come March through May. This is our sweet spot. Clear skies, calm ocean, not unbearably hot. Book 3-4 months ahead because these months fill up.

If You Want Fewer Crowds

Come June through August (hot but quiet, except July-August when Korean groups arrive) or December through January (cooler, some rain risk, but way fewer people).

If You Want Best Prices

September through November. Villa rates drop 20-30%. The trade-off is weather risk. Good for groups that are flexible or have lots of indoor plans anyway (corporate retreats, for example).

What to Pack

Everyone Needs

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+, reef-safe if you care about that)
  • Swimsuits (bring 2-3 so you always have a dry one)
  • Light clothes: shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, sandals
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Bug spray (mosquitoes at dusk)

Dry Season Extras

  • More sunscreen (you'll go through it fast)
  • Light long sleeves for sun protection
  • After-sun lotion (aloe)

Wet Season Extras

  • Light rain jacket or poncho
  • Quick-dry clothes
  • Waterproof bag for phones and cameras
  • One pair of closed shoes (sandals + rain = slippery)

Nice Dinner Out

If you're planning to go to nice restaurants, bring one slightly dressier outfit. Da Nang is casual, but if you're going somewhere like Nén, you'll want long pants and a collared shirt (guys) or a dress (women). Not required, but you'll feel better.

What NOT to Pack

  • Heavy jackets (you won't need them even in "winter")
  • Tons of beach towels (villas provide them)
  • Hair dryers (all villas have them)
  • Workout clothes unless you're actually going to work out (most people say they will, then don't)

Typhoon Risk (Real Talk)

Typhoons can hit Da Nang, usually September through November. It's rare. In 10 years, we've had maybe 5-6 that actually affected trips.

What happens: If a typhoon is coming, we'll know 3-4 days ahead. We message you immediately. Options are:

  • Ride it out at the villa (usually fine, the compound is safe, you just can't go outside for 12-24 hours)
  • Reschedule your trip (we work with you on this)
  • Get travel insurance before you book (smart idea for wet season trips)

Worst case we've seen: A group had to stay inside for one full day during a typhoon. We brought in extra food and drinks, set up movies and games, made it work. They said it was actually kind of fun in a weird way.

Humidity (Nobody Talks About This But You Should Know)

Da Nang is humid. Like, 70-85% humidity year-round. Your clothes won't dry overnight if you hand-wash them. Your hair will do weird things. You'll sweat more than you expect.

Tips:

  • Pack quick-dry fabrics
  • Use the AC in your room to dry clothes faster (hang them near the AC unit)
  • Embrace the beach hair vibe
  • Drink way more water than you think you need

Booking Around Weather

When you message me about dates, I'll tell you straight up what to expect weather-wise. If you're booking October and I think there's high typhoon risk, I'll say so. If you're booking July and it's going to be scorching hot, I'll mention it.

No surprises. The goal is to match your group to the right time of year based on what you want (perfect beach weather vs. lower prices vs. fewer crowds) and what you're willing to deal with (heat vs. rain risk vs. crowds).

Best Time for Different Groups

  • Families with kids: March through May (calm ocean, great weather)
  • Corporate groups: December through February (cooler temps for meetings, some rain risk but usually fine)
  • Surfers: September through November (bigger waves)
  • Budget-conscious groups: September through November (lowest prices, weather gamble)
  • Large groups (30+): March through May or September through October (easier to block multiple villas)
